Lincoln Legacy – February
On October 31, 1924 the new school district opens its doors—but what should the name be?
- The official name printed on the bonds sold for construction was “Rural Agricultural School District Number 1, Fractional Townships of Ypsilanti and Augusta”
- Marvin S. Pittman School was first proposed to honor the founder of the school
- Dr. Pittman respectfully declined citing reasons among them, “it is contrary to custom to name buildings in honor of living men.”
- The School Board considered the name—“The Trailblazer School”
- Finally, Lincoln School was considered and the students voted to confirm the selection
Next month’s facts will include the opening of school and an early school tragedy.
